Union Budget 2023: What did health sector get in Budget 2023?

BUDGET 2023: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is presenting the country’s 75th budget in the Lok Sabha. While presenting the budget, the Finance Minister made big announcements on health services and medical infrastructure. Nirmala Sitharaman said that 157 new nursing colleges will be opened, a target has also been set to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047. Let us know what health got in Budget 2023.

What did health get in Budget 2023?

In an announcement for the health sector, Sitharaman said, “To make India a global center for millet research, the Indian Institute of Millet Research, located in Hyderabad, will be made a Center of Excellence.”

The Finance Minister announced measures on the health front in which 157 new nursing colleges will be set up in co-location with the existing 157 medical colleges established since 2014. The Finance Minister said that a mission has been set to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047.

While presenting the budget, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, adding on medical infrastructure and health services, said that emphasis will be laid on increasing ICMR facilities in new nursing colleges.

The Indian Council for Medical Research lab will be made available to public and private medical college faculty and private sector R&D teams to encourage collaborative research and innovation.

What was announced in the budget 2022

Rs 5,000 crore was earmarked for COVID-19 vaccination assistance to states for 2022-23.

The revised estimates for FY22 show an expenditure of Rs 39,000 crore on the vaccination campaign, which has covered more than 75% of the adult population since its launch on 16 January 2021.

There was an increase of more than seven percent in the allocation of the National Health Mission.

However, the highlight of the last budget was the announcement of the ‘National Tele Mental Health Programme’.

“It will consist of a network of 23 tele-mental health centers of excellence, with NIMHANS as the nodal center and International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore providing technology support,” the finance minister had said.
