The Rising Stars Challenge, a challenge between the best young players in the NBA and the G League, opened the big festivities at NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. And Team Pau was the winner, with José Alvarado chosen as the MVP .
Alvarado is the first player in New Orleans Pelicans history to win this award and also the first Latin American to do so.
In the first game of the night, Team Pau faced Team Deron in a clash between two “captains” who shared the Western Conference team in the 2011 and 2012 All-Star Game.
The victory went to those chosen by the Spaniard, who prevailed 40-25 thanks to a tremendous closing match: everything had started quite evenly, with a score of 13-12 for Gasol’s men, but a flurry led by José Alvarado led them to victory and a triple by Keegan Murray defined the game.
Earlier, Trey Murphy III gave a little demonstration of what he can do in Saturday’s Slam Dunk Contest.
Between Alvarado (13) and Paolo Banchero (9) they added more than half of Team Pau’s points.
The second semifinal pitted Team Joakim against Team Jason and Noah’s team beat Terry’s team, also without much drama at the end. It was 40-32 for the Frenchmen , who quickly got a 12-point lead in the game and controlled it from there.
Quentin Grimes of the New York Knicks hit the game-clinching basket. Grimes was the top scorer of the match, with 13 points. Evan Mobley followed with eight goals.
Before, Jeremy Sochan left the great highlight of the match.

However Team Joakim recovered quickly with a triple by Grimes to shrink to 14-13 and another one that tied the score at 16 .
Noah’s men went to the front with a layup from Grimes, totally fired up, but Alvarado quickly tied the game and Barnes scored to make it 20-18 for Team Pau, before Banchero extended the difference to four points with two free throws.
The winning shot was finished off by José Alvarado , with a triple converted in Team Pau’s first chance to win 25-20.
The scoring of the winners in the final was quite distributed: 7 points from Mathurin, 6 from Barnes, 5 from Alvarado, 4 from Banchero and 3 from Jaden Ivey. Neither Andrew Nembhard nor Keegan Murray scored.
