Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday wrote to President Draupadi Murmu expressing grief over the unspeakable atrocities against women in violence-hit Manipur and urged him to take steps to ensure peace in the northeastern state.
Days after a video surfaced of women being paraded naked in Manipur, Soren said in the letter that the country cannot allow the barbaric treatment of tribals in Manipur.
Soren has said that silence in the face of brutality is a terrible crime so I am compelled to write to you with a heavy heart and deep pain at the violence in Manipur today. I am deeply distressed and concerned about the deteriorating situation in Manipur, the unspeakable atrocities and sexual exploitation against women.
Soren said in the letter that Manipur has been burning since 2 months, heart-wrenching videos are surfacing and there has been an unprecedented decline in democratic governance in the northeastern state. He urged the President to ensure justice for the people of Manipur and restore peace there.
Soren said that in this most difficult time of crisis facing Manipur and India, we look to you as the last source of hope and inspiration who can show light to the people of Manipur and all citizens of India in this difficult time.
Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes since May 3 between the majority Meitei community, concentrated in the Imphal Valley, and the tribal Kukis living in the hilly areas. So far more than 160 people have died in the violence between the two communities.
