On December 7, 1972, the Apollo 17 mission launched from Earth, with the last trio of astronauts reaching the surface of the moon, a hit that is now 51 years old. The Apollo 17 trip was made up of Gemini 9 and Apollo 10 mission commander and veteran Eugene A. Cernan, lunar module pilot and geologist Harrison H. Schmitt and space module pilot Ronald E. Evans.

Cernan was the last human to land on the surface of the Moon in the Taurus-Littrow Valley (near the Taurus Mountains, near the Littrow Crater), on the border between the Mare Tranquillitatis and the Mare Serenitatis. The ‘Challenger’ descent module started on December 11th at 21.2ºN 30.6ºE (Taurus Littrow area) bringing up tripulantes to Cernan and Harrison H. Schmitt.

What happened to the last lunar mission?

During their stay on the lunar surface, they traveled 35 kilometers on foot and in the lunar rover, in which they collected 110 kilos of lunar rock rocks, he informs NASA. We have installed a surface gravity meter to analyze the attraction that the Sun and Earth exert on our satellite, an apparatus measuring the mass, speed and frequency of meteorite strikes and erosion of the material observed by the impact.

In the same way there will be an apparatus for determining the seismic profile based on explosive cargoes, as well as an indicator of the lunar atmospheric composition close to the surface. Ronald B. Evans remained in lunar orbit in the ‘America’ sending module for a period of 147 hours and 48 minutes until his companions returned to the ascension module.

Why was this lunar mission important?

This mission has various records: longest stay on the Moon with a total of 75 hours; longest period on the lunar surface without interruption (7 hours and 37 minutes), as well as the maximum exploration time with 22 hours and 5 minutes. America landed in the Pacific Ocean on December 19, 1972, in a span of 301 hours, 51 minutes and 59 seconds.

With this tour I finalized it project Apolo (which was located at 12 hours on the Moon of a total of 21 who were orbiting it). After six lunar landings, the Apollo program will be terminated after the Apollo 18, 19 and 20 missions will be canceled due to limitations of the requirement.
