The earthquake that occurred on Monday morning in Turkey and Syria has killed thousands of people. There is also news of many people getting injured in the earthquake. Turkish President Recep Erdogan has told that 912 people have died and 5,383 people have been injured in Turkey alone due to the earthquake. While the death toll in Syria is around 550. In both the countries, this death toll can increase manifold. The intensity of the earthquake has been estimated at 7.8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake has most affected 10 cities of Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmania, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis.
The President of Turkey has said that he cannot estimate how much the death toll will increase as the search and rescue operation is still going on.
Syria’s health ministry said more than 326 people were killed and 1,042 were injured. In addition to those figures, rescue teams in Syria’s northwest in areas not controlled by the government put the death toll at 221.
People have posted many pictures and videos on social media, in which destroyed buildings can be seen. Due to which the devastation in the city can be estimated. The death toll is expected to rise as many buildings have collapsed. Rescue teams have been deployed to search for people buried in the debris.
Turkish President Rajab Tayyab Erdugan tweeted that the rescue work of the victims of the accident is going on. We hope that we will recover from this disaster as soon as possible and with minimum loss.
PM Modi also expressed grief
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted after the earthquake, saying, “Anguished by the loss of lives and damage of property due to the Earthquake in Turkey. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. India stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey and is ready to offer all possible assistance to cope with this tragedy.”
PM Modi gave a similar message to Syria in another tweet and wrote that “
Deeply pained to learn that the devastating earthquake has also affected Syria. My sincere condolences to the families of the victims. We share the grief of Syrian people and remain committed to provide assistance and support in this difficult time.“
The government of India will send NDRF, team of doctors and relief materials to earthquake-affected Turkey.
