85th General Convention of the Indian National Congress Nava Raipur.

The 85th General Convention of the Indian National Congress (INC) has started today in Nava Raipur of Chhattisgarh. On which the eyes of the whole country will be fixed. All the big leaders of Congress including Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge are participating in this session. The meeting of the Congress Steering Committee began on Friday at the Convention Center in Raipur. The committee members arrived on two buses. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Ajay Maken were on the same bus.

In September 2022, differences cropped up between the two leaders after Rajasthan Congress MLAs defied the party line and held a parallel meeting. Maken had resigned from the post in-charge of Rajasthan Congress.

Sources reveal that the steering committee may decide on the election of the CWC, the steering committee meeting will be held in the morning and the subject committee meeting in the evening. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh said that after the steering committee meeting, we will know about it. Frankly some can say that the party is all set for the CWC elections.

The session will run for 3 days, discussion on many issues

This general convention of Congress will run from 24 to 26 February i.e. for 3 days. its schedule is something like this

  • February 24: On the first day there is a meeting of the steering committee at 10 am and the subject committee at 4 pm. A total of 6 proposals will be discussed on the first day.
  • February 25: Political, economic and international proposals will be discussed on the second day.
  • February 26: On the third day, there is a proposal to discuss many issues including farmers, youth, employment, education, social justice. On the same day, there will be a speech by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at 2 pm and a Congress rally at 4 pm.

Why is this Congress session important?

The last session of Congress was held in Udaipur in which the decision of Bharat Jodo Yatra was taken. Now after the success of Bharat Jodo, this session is important. After this visit, at least Congress has come in discussions. Now the challenge before the party is that this atmosphere should not cool down before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

On the other hand, the Haath Se Jodo campaign of the Congress is not yet visible in its full form, the party needs to put more emphasis on this too.

Being an election year and with the Lok Sabha elections almost a year away, the Congress will have to chalk out an important strategy in this session.

Controversy before convention

Before the convention, ED raids were conducted on many leaders in Chhattisgarh and especially in Raipur. Congress called it a conspiracy to disrupt the convention. This matter was not even settled that Congress media incharge Pawan Kheda was arrested by the police from the airport on Thursday while going from Delhi to Raipur. After this he got anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court. The entire Congress party became enraged on this matter. Mallikarjun Kharge said that, “ED raids are conducted on our leaders of Chhattisgarh before the General Assembly. Today the media chairman was forcibly taken off the ship and arrested. The Modi government has turned India’s democracy into a Hitlership. We strongly condemn this dictatorship.”

On the other hand, Ashok Gehlot said on this, “First the raids of ED in Raipur and now such an act (arresting Pawan Kheda) shows the fury of BJP. It is condemnable.”
